[00:03:55] Drama in the world of AI.
[00:03:57] Yeah.
[00:03:58] It's kind of a...
[00:03:59] Guess who is the drama queen in the story we're about to do?
[00:04:03] Yeah.
[00:04:03] Easy guess.
[00:04:04] Big surprise.
[00:04:05] Guys.
[00:04:06] This all has to do with the Elon Musk OpenAI lawsuit.
[00:04:11] And there are some newly released court documents in this lawsuit that are kind of making the rounds.
[00:04:18] And of course, it's dishy.
[00:04:20] People love to get that inside scoop on how this stuff goes down behind the scenes.
[00:04:27] And it shows some of the communications that have been released.
[00:04:30] They date between 2015 to 2018 and really kind of show a bit of the mood, a bit of the dynamics of that early development of the company all the way through to Musk's departure.
[00:04:45] This is all unearthed as a result of the lawsuit.
[00:04:49] And yeah, there's just a number of things that are, I guess, curious more than anything.
[00:04:54] I don't know if there's anything revolutionary or groundbreaking, but it really shows off the power struggle that was kind of happening inside, particularly in 2017.
[00:05:05] There were tensions over control of the company with Greg Brockman and Ilya Sutskiver really concerned about the concentration of power and the potential for what they call an AGI dictatorship internally, not just internally, though, also from companies like Google.
[00:05:23] It really seems like they were very threatened by Google in this early stage and like, oh, my goodness, Google is going to run away with this if we don't really.
[00:05:33] And Musk made fun of them.
[00:05:34] There's a 0% chance you're going to catch up to Google now.
[00:05:36] You've left behind Google's way ahead.
[00:05:39] Google's winning.
[00:05:39] Because Google, let's not forget, created the foundational structure or technology in Transformers that led them here.
[00:05:48] Yeah, there from the very beginning.
[00:05:50] Deep mind, a big kind of concern, which, yeah, don't hear a whole lot about deep mind nowadays, but certainly not.
[00:05:58] Well, through Google, I think we do, yeah.
[00:06:00] Through Google, I suppose.
[00:06:01] But it's not making the regular kind of impact that it was back then when Google really was kind of leading in this regard.
[00:06:11] In 2017, also, there was a lot about Sutskiver and Brockman questioning Sam Altman's motivations, Altman's priorities, kind of uncertain whether AGI was his primary motivation, that sort of stuff.
[00:06:28] Yeah, there's a lot of interesting stuff in here.
[00:06:30] The relationship to Microsoft, Musk was very concerned that he didn't want to become Microsoft's marketing pawns.
[00:06:40] I think there were even worse words in this.
[00:06:43] Yeah, he said, and pardon me for what I'm about to say, he said, would be worth way more than $50 million not to seem like Microsoft's marketing bitch.
[00:06:52] Apologies, that's his word, not mine.
[00:06:55] And so that's interesting.
[00:06:57] The other thing that struck me, Jason, was the political angle of this.
[00:07:00] You know, Musk is such a weird dude where sometimes I think that he just does whatever comes into his head.
[00:07:08] Sometimes you think he has an evil master scheme, and it's hard to tell which it is, right?
[00:07:13] Because suddenly out of nowhere he'll say, I'm going to bore holes in the ground.
[00:07:16] Then he does it for a while.
[00:07:17] Then he says, oh, that doesn't work.
[00:07:18] Or he's going to create the hyperloop because he wants to screw with California on its transportation structure.
[00:07:25] Yeah, you really don't know.
[00:07:26] You really don't know with any of this stuff.
[00:07:28] You never know.
[00:07:28] Because it always sounds so pie in the sky.
[00:07:30] And then he actually goes forward with it.
[00:07:33] Some of them.
[00:07:34] With mixed result, with mixed outcome.
[00:07:36] Exactly.
[00:07:36] But yeah, you never really know kind of what's still in the net.
[00:07:39] So what it should be here was, and given current politics, you know, life has changed, given his role in politics now.
[00:07:47] Yeah.
[00:07:48] The notion of the political concern around AGI.
[00:07:52] Now, we all know, everybody who watches the show knows that I think AGI is another way to spell BS.
[00:07:57] And I don't think that it's coming, but they do.
[00:08:01] And so they think that there's something about the power.
[00:08:03] And so I wonder, it was that political angle on the AGI.
[00:08:07] They were concerned about Musk being the god of AGI.
[00:08:10] Or concerned about others being the god of AGI.
[00:08:12] Yeah.
[00:08:12] And concerned on a political level, do they believe that AGI is going to put them in charge of the world?
[00:08:20] Is the overarching strategy here is that when we create this machine that's smarter than anybody,
[00:08:26] we will thus be in charge because we control that machine?
[00:08:30] Oh, boy.
[00:08:31] That is quite a weighty topic right there.
[00:08:35] Especially right now.
[00:08:36] Exactly.
[00:08:37] I don't think they'll ever make AGI.
[00:08:39] I don't think it's going to happen.
[00:08:41] So I'm not raising any alarms about that.
[00:08:42] I'm really not.
[00:08:43] But I'm trying to understand the motives and the larger scheme here.
[00:08:47] And, you know, I've said recently that I was among those who thought that Musk was speaking of crazy things he did on the spur of the moment was $44 billion for Twitter.
[00:08:57] What an insane and stupid thing to do.
[00:08:59] Well, he's at the seat of power right now probably because of Twitter.
[00:09:03] Mm-hmm.
[00:09:04] And so is this AGI power thing part of that political view he has that he can, from the Musk meritocracy view, from the Tescriall kind of Ubermensch view, take over the world?
[00:09:25] Mm-hmm.
[00:09:25] Is it technological totalitarianism?
[00:09:28] Is that what's behind his head?
[00:09:30] I don't know.
[00:09:31] But that angle, that political angle on AGI was something I hadn't thought of before until I saw these stories and that discussion.
[00:09:38] Yeah, for sure.
[00:09:39] And it's threaded throughout here.
[00:09:41] I was just talking about the leadership, you know, questions from Sitzkever and Brockman.
[00:09:46] One of the quotes is, we don't understand your cost function.
[00:09:49] We don't understand why the CEO title is so important to you.
[00:09:52] Your stated reasons have changed.
[00:09:54] It's hard to really understand what's driving it.
[00:09:56] Is AGI truly your primary motivation?
[00:09:58] How does it connect to your political goals?
[00:10:02] And, you know, kind of signaling that there's something more there in that uncertainty.
[00:10:07] Yeah, it's really interesting.
[00:10:09] And like I said-
[00:10:10] Yeah, we have this quote in here.
[00:10:11] The timing is great.
[00:10:11] I'm not sure it's the pair wrote.
[00:10:13] So who was the pair?
[00:10:14] So it must have been Musk and-
[00:10:16] No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
[00:10:17] I'm trying to figure out.
[00:10:18] That month, Sitzkever and Brockman escalated with a joint email to Musk and Altman.
[00:10:22] Okay, so it's their email.
[00:10:23] In which they said, quote, the goal of open AI is to make the future good and to avoid an AI dictatorship.
[00:10:30] You are concerned that Demis Hassabis could create an AI dictatorship.
[00:10:38] So do we, the pair wrote.
[00:10:40] So it is a bad idea to create a structure where you could become a dictator if you choose to,
[00:10:46] especially given that we can create some other structure that avoids that possibility.
[00:10:50] This is all the scheme of the AI safety as well.
[00:10:53] So they think that there's a, I mean, I just really hadn't seen that before.
[00:10:58] It's not just they're going to create a machine that's smarter than us.
[00:11:02] They think that it is the basis of a dictatorship, of a totalitarian regime.
[00:11:06] It enables a broader-
[00:11:07] That's what they believe.
[00:11:09] Power.
[00:11:10] And they think that safety means preventing that.
[00:11:13] Yeah.
[00:11:14] I mean, yeah.
[00:11:16] Hi, everybody.
[00:11:17] What a light start to the show here.
[00:11:19] I mean, that's feeling a lot more prescient right now, you know, in this moment where we're kind of on the cusp,
[00:11:26] the verge of changing administrations here, at least in the U.S.,
[00:11:30] and knowing kind of how Elon Musk as just one example plays a part in that,
[00:11:37] potentially a growing kind of friendliness to the development of AI.
[00:11:42] It really makes you question, okay, well, then where does that come from?
[00:11:47] If the people in these power positions suddenly get very, very cozy with artificial intelligence development,
[00:11:56] like, is it driven by the same motivation, potentially, of, oh, well, this actually enables even more power for us
[00:12:03] if we are the ones to get there first and to harness it?
[00:12:08] And wow.
[00:12:09] That's a pretty big deal.
[00:12:11] That's heavy.
[00:12:12] That's heavy.
[00:12:16] Musk also, Rob says in the comments, I picked the wrong day to start to give up sniffing glue.
[00:12:22] Yeah.
[00:12:23] Good quote.
[00:12:24] Good quote.
[00:12:24] A plus for that one.
[00:12:27] Need to see that movie again.
[00:12:29] Elon Musk also says in these emails, Tesla is the only path that could even hope to hold a candle to Google,
[00:12:38] talking about the potential kind of tying of Tesla to OpenAI to better compete against Google.
[00:12:48] This leads to Sam telling Elon that they are pursuing a for-profit launch, i.e. no Tesla attachment,
[00:12:55] to which Elon says, please be explicit that I have no financial interest in the for-profit arm of OpenAI.
[00:13:01] And that appears to be kind of the-
[00:13:03] The divorce.
[00:13:04] The point at which Musk exits.
[00:13:06] Is Musk in a similar-
[00:13:09] Like, I don't actually know the answer to this.
[00:13:12] It's just kind of coming to me right now.
[00:13:13] Like, how does the Musk then square up to the Musk now?
[00:13:19] And by Musk now, I mean the Musk of the last, like, couple of weeks where suddenly these things become clear in a completely different light that we didn't see before.
[00:13:28] Like, is this a different personality entirely?
[00:13:31] Or is it in some way an extension of how he was thinking then versus now?
[00:13:35] That's interesting.
[00:13:36] The New York, I made fun of the New York Times this morning, as I tend to these days every day,
[00:13:42] on the socials where they said that as Musk drifted to the right, he moved his businesses to Texas.
[00:13:48] And I thought, drift is an awfully light verb.
[00:13:52] And one of the responders in the socials said, yeah, more like rocketed to the right, appropriate for Musk.
[00:13:59] Right?
[00:13:59] So, I don't know that he had a clear political ideology before.
[00:14:06] He had a philosophical ideology in terms of test grail and all that.
[00:14:11] I don't know that he was, in fact, as political as Lord knows he is now.
[00:14:16] And I think it's-
[00:14:17] And neither, frankly, did Trump.
[00:14:18] Trump was never ideological either, really.
[00:14:21] I mean, he was a Democrat.
[00:14:22] So, it wasn't-
[00:14:23] In either case, was it coming from a belief system?
[00:14:29] So much as a belief instead, I'm going to try to be as generous as I can be here.
[00:14:39] They believe that there's a meritocracy and that they're the ones who should be in charge because they believe that they're smarter.
[00:14:45] Look what we do.
[00:14:46] Look what we prove to you how smart we are.
[00:14:47] We went into space.
[00:14:49] We're billionaires.
[00:14:49] We do this.
[00:14:50] We do that.
[00:14:50] Right?
[00:14:50] Yep.
[00:14:51] Yep.
[00:14:51] Yep.
[00:14:51] And I think that's what ties it together.
[00:14:53] So, both of them had to take on an appearance of an ideology that didn't really matter.
[00:15:04] I'm not meaning to get all political and lose viewers, and don't worry.
[00:15:07] I'm not going to get too political.
[00:15:07] But I've just reread Hannah Arendt's The Origins of Totalitarianism because I think it has very valuable views.
[00:15:16] And one thing in there, Jason, is that she makes clear that they tried to avoid ideology.
[00:15:21] They didn't want it because then you get arguments about it.
[00:15:24] Then people get to fight about it.
[00:15:25] And I didn't realize that Hitler never got rid of the Weimar Constitution.
[00:15:32] He just trampled over it.
[00:15:33] It didn't matter.
[00:15:35] So, I don't think it matters what Musk thinks in most of ideology.
[00:15:41] He thinks that waste is a bad thing.
[00:15:43] I'm going to cut government by two-thirds.
[00:15:45] That's a belief.
[00:15:46] And you can call that conservative.
[00:15:48] Certainly, that would be easy to – that's a view of smaller government.
[00:15:50] It certainly is a conservative view.
[00:15:52] But I don't think it comes out of a general cohesive ideology.
[00:15:58] Yeah, yeah.
[00:15:58] So, is he different?
[00:15:59] Yeah, probably because he has beliefs of convenience right now.
[00:16:09] What he might have thought of NATO two years ago versus today?
[00:16:12] I don't know.
[00:16:13] Yeah.
[00:16:14] I don't know that it matters.
[00:16:15] Yeah, yeah.
[00:16:17] Interesting.
[00:16:17] But these are our new overlords, folks, because they're going to make AGI and they're going to be in charge.
[00:16:24] The artificial –
[00:16:25] You better hope I'm right about AGI.
[00:16:28] That's all I can say.

[00:16:30] Fair.
[00:16:31] Absolutely.
[00:16:33] Interesting stuff there.
[00:16:34] It is really interesting.
[00:16:36] Yeah, it is.
[00:16:37] It's a moment right now.
[00:16:38] It really feels that way.
[00:16:40] Yeah.
[00:16:41] We often chide AI as a substandard replacement for human creativity and humanity in general.
[00:16:49] And especially – I feel like the often used example is poetry.
[00:16:55] I've seen that a lot where it's like if you ask ChatGPT to write poetry, like anytime that I've seen poetry coming from ChatGPT, I feel like it's the most baseline banal kind of output.
[00:17:07] It's predictable.
[00:17:09] It's all the things.
[00:17:10] It's not really pushing boundaries compared to any – good, put that in air quotes because it's all subjective.
[00:17:17] But good –
[00:17:18] I'll remind you when I testified before the Senate, Marsha Blackburn had ChatGPT.
[00:17:22] She tried to get it to write a tribute to Donald Trump and it wouldn't.
[00:17:27] And then she had it write a tribute to Joe Biden.
[00:17:29] And it was really terrible poetry.
[00:17:32] Yes.
[00:17:33] So ChatGPT is known for bad poetry.
[00:17:35] Or is it?
[00:17:38] Because a University of Pittsburgh study revealed that sometimes it creates great poetry apparently.
[00:17:47] And in this study, they used poems from 10 poets spanning 700 years.
[00:17:53] ChatGPT generated poetry in the style of each poet.
[00:17:57] There were a number of participants, 1,634 participants to be exact, who evaluated all of this.
[00:18:06] And they could distinguish between them only 46.6% of the time.
[00:18:12] AI-generated poetry consistently rated higher across 13 qualitative measures.
[00:18:20] Four out of five judged as human, the poetry that was actually made by AI.
[00:18:26] Five considered least likely to be human were actually written by famous poets.
[00:18:32] You're guaranteed to get some of this wrong.
[00:18:34] I mean, you know, at the end of the day, there's going to be some percentage of people that get it wrong that don't guess properly.
[00:18:41] But the people who have done this report, you know, seem to be inferring that AI-generated poetry, like it or not, you know, in a blind taste test, people preferred it over regular Coke.
[00:18:56] Yeah.
[00:18:58] Yeah.
[00:18:58] And does that say more about, pardon me, ChatGPT, or does it say more about the taste and cultural abilities of the population today?
[00:19:07] Well, that's a really good point.
[00:19:08] Because if you're talking about literature from the last 700 years, I mean, our approach, our understanding, our comfort level of reading literature from 500 years ago, let alone poetry that's often very symbolic.
[00:19:21] And, you know, I imagine, yeah, that's probably a part of this for sure.
[00:19:26] And what is ChatGPT known for doing, right?
[00:19:28] It homogenizes things.
[00:19:29] It brings them together into a form that is a common denominator.
[00:19:34] So if you're going to, I'll use this word advisedly, modernize poetry, that is to say to bring in more modern words and perspectives and metaphors and taste, then it shouldn't be surprising that people today preferred that which was cooked a little.
[00:20:01] Yeah.
[00:20:02] Yeah.
[00:20:02] You know, it's probably a poor comparison.
[00:20:07] But what's coming up for me is it's kind of like I've got all these movies that as a kid I adored and I loved and I have a soft spot in my heart for these movies.
[00:20:18] And I can't tell you how many times I pulled out this movie with my kids and been like, all right, this was a big deal when I was a kid.
[00:20:25] You're going to love this movie.
[00:20:27] And then we get to the end and I'm like, so what did you think?
[00:20:30] They're like, hey, it was kind of boring.
[00:20:32] You know, it's just.
[00:20:34] Well, what did you think?
[00:20:35] Did you still think it was magnificent or did you look at it and say, well, sometimes.
[00:20:40] Well, you know how sometimes when you're in the room in a situation like that, you can almost pick up on the energy of the room or at least you think.
[00:20:46] I've been in that situation where I think I can, where it's just like, OK, it's a little too quiet in here.
[00:20:51] People aren't getting it or, you know, they're not digging it the way I thought they were going to.
[00:20:56] Yeah, sometimes I do.
[00:20:58] But sometimes like Goonies, I can't believe we're talking about Goonies and we're talking about literature from 700 years ago.
[00:21:04] What was I saying about culture today?
[00:21:06] Yeah, totally.
[00:21:07] I mean, yeah, we're absolutely proving your point.
[00:21:10] I mean, yeah, it was that way with Goonies where I was just like, oh, my God, like they're still totally whole time.
[00:21:14] Shakespeare is good, but it's no Goonies.
[00:21:17] It's no Goonies.
[00:21:18] Exactly.
[00:21:19] So anyways, I think you might be on to something.
[00:21:22] Although if they if Chachi BT was rewriting the poetry in the style of, I guess.
[00:21:30] Yeah, I guess.
[00:21:30] How do you determine like how close of the style, how close to the style it actually was?
[00:21:35] I wish they had the examples in the paper.
[00:21:37] I don't have the data.
[00:21:38] You've got to go off somewhere else for the data.
[00:21:40] Yeah.
[00:21:41] Yeah, because it's it's fun.
[00:21:44] Yeah.
[00:21:46] Yeah.
[00:21:47] Interesting, though.
[00:21:48] Nonetheless, I really appreciate your your your insight there, though, because I hadn't really considered that about kind of the more modernization of the kind of taste level or what we're used to compared to just just the comprehension level.
[00:22:03] We don't we simply don't people used to read poetry and they understood it.
[00:22:08] It was something they got.
[00:22:08] They could get into the rhythm of it, literally, and understand what it was trying to do.
[00:22:12] And we just simply don't do that.
[00:22:14] The closest we got song lyrics, but you can't you can't understand the song lyrics anyway.
[00:22:17] So and the song lyrics are influenced by so many other things also.
[00:22:21] Yes.
[00:22:22] Poetry set to music.
[00:22:24] Yeah.
[00:22:24] And so it's a it's different than just listening to words and really contemplating what what that sequence of words actually means in the context.
[00:22:32] But back to your main point, though, your first point, rather.
[00:22:36] Chachapiti poetry was so obviously awful that it's clearly gotten better.
[00:22:43] Yeah.
[00:22:43] Right.
[00:22:44] And if it can if it can mock Shelley, fine.
[00:22:47] OK, good.
[00:22:48] Right.

[00:23:14] Getting something called Copilot Actions, which automates repetitive tasks with customizable actions.
[00:23:21] You can make them recurring.
[00:23:23] So think about like creating a template around generating a weekly report or summarizing your communications from a particular moment and automating all of that.
[00:23:36] So it's an agent that really does that for you.
[00:23:39] So also creating specialized agents or rather Microsoft has created specialized agents for self-service agents for things like human resources, IT tasks, SharePoint agent for Doc Search, Meeting Note Taker.
[00:23:54] Some of this stuff is kind of standard fare.
[00:23:55] But, you know, time and time again in recent months, it's all about, you know, firing up an agent to do the things that we don't want to have to do, the mundane at Microsoft.
[00:24:07] Considering Microsoft has more than one billion users of its products, that's kind of a big deal for agentic AI.
[00:24:14] Yeah, it absolutely is.
[00:24:19] You know, so I went to a virtual event for the World Economic Forum, otherwise known as Davos, but I don't get invited to Davos anymore because I'm not important anymore.
[00:24:31] And this is the AI governance forum that I'm a part of.
[00:24:34] And I think it's Chatham House, but one of the executives was there and gave a presentation.
[00:24:39] I'm sure it was a public presentation.
[00:24:41] So Cognizant is a company that, according to their site, you know, helps companies modernize technology.
[00:24:47] So he gave a brief demonstration of what they're doing with agents.
[00:24:51] And what was interesting to me was the first time I saw a demonstration of the interaction of agents.
[00:24:58] So you have a set of, a map of agents.
[00:25:03] There's an HR agent.
[00:25:04] There's a law, a legal agent.
[00:25:05] There's a PR agent.
[00:25:08] There's a this agent.
[00:25:09] There's a that agent, right?
[00:25:10] And it shows if a company, if somebody comes in and says, I'm getting married, what do I need to know?
[00:25:18] What it showed was the main agent, the main question box would light up other agents as it went to those agents.
[00:25:26] Well, is there a tax thing?
[00:25:27] Is there a legal thing that somebody has to do?
[00:25:29] Is there this thing?
[00:25:29] Is there that thing?
[00:25:30] And so it would, in turn, ask questions in English of the other agents and then come back with the, and then take whatever it got and then, and turn summarize it the way notebook L.M. would or whatever it would and give it back to you.
[00:25:46] And that was the first time I saw, that started to click for me a little bit about how an agentic or agentive world, we've got to settle this, which one it is, world would look like is as agents go talk to other agents to do things.

[00:26:01] I thought in the past, it's fine.
[00:26:02] I want a plane reservation and it goes to United Airlines and does something.
[00:26:05] Okay.
[00:26:05] I can visualize that.
[00:26:07] But this back and forth of using, in fact, a language model and an English language chat as the conduit for that was interesting.

[00:26:20] And having them all kind of tap into each other's, as if they were humans, you know, each of the other agents' strengths.

[00:26:28] When Mike Elgin was on, when you were out a couple of weeks ago, he talked at length about Swarm technology, which is, I think, is the name for exactly what you're talking about, about this kind of agentic collaboration that's happening.

[00:26:48] Agentive doesn't work as well for me, but I suppose it's not up to me.

[00:28:49] We talked a little bit last week about AI and the health industry.
[00:28:53] Got a couple of more stories along that line this week.
[00:28:58] UVA Health System revealed a study that showed how ChatGPT4 outperformed physicians in diagnostic accuracy.
[00:29:07] It beat physicians using conventional methods as well as those physicians who were working with AI assistants,
[00:29:15] which I found that kind of interesting.
[00:29:16] If the AI was working on its own, it achieved a 92% accuracy compared to 76.3% when the physician was working with the AI.
[00:29:29] So less when you've got both of them working together.
[00:29:32] The AI is like, just get out of the way.
[00:29:35] You're slowing me down.
[00:29:36] Like, get out.
[00:29:38] And then the physician alone, 73.7%, according to this report.
[00:29:43] And, you know, maybe part of that is the fact that doctors often saw the ChatGPT capabilities as more of like a search engine versus using it as a diagnostic partner.
[00:29:57] So maybe that would account for the lesser percentage.
[00:30:02] But I don't know.
[00:30:02] I sensed in here.
[00:30:04] That's so interesting to me.
[00:30:05] Having come, so my mother broke a chain of everyone in her family were doctors going way back, way, way back.
[00:30:11] And she married an engineer.
[00:30:13] But my mother always told me, don't be a doctor.
[00:30:15] You know, terrible life, terrible hours.
[00:30:18] No, it's awful.
[00:30:20] But I watched her views of doctors through that.
[00:30:23] And doctors have egos.
[00:30:26] Speaking of being, you know, AGI dictator, I can save lives.
[00:30:29] And God bless them for the ability to do that.
[00:30:31] And you deserve having an ego for the ability to do that.
[00:30:33] I salute you and I hope you're good at it and deserve that ego.
[00:30:36] So I think that what I sensed in this story, Jason, was that some of the doctors resented the ChatGPT perhaps being right and resisted.

[00:30:48] Which is an issue, right?
[00:30:50] I mean, I had a health issue a couple years ago.
[00:30:53] And I went to three or four doctors.
[00:30:56] And it was the classic case of the blind man and the elephant.

[00:31:00] The cardiac guy was going to see cardiac.
[00:31:03] The thoracic guy was going to see thoracic, whatever.
[00:31:06] And that's what they're like.
[00:31:08] And what ChatGPT does is break you out of that presumption in silo.
[00:31:12] Have you thought of this?
[00:31:13] Here's another way to look at it.
[00:31:14] And they don't like that.
[00:31:17] So you'd think that a wise doctor would have performed better because they had that.
[00:31:22] Instead, they resisted it.
[00:31:23] Yeah.
[00:31:24] And I wonder if five years down the line, when maybe this is a bit more normalized, if that changes, if that isn't just the response.
[00:31:36] Like right now, there is so much anti-AI sentiment that it's doing all of these things and it's taking jobs.
[00:31:44] And it wants to be smarter than me.

[00:31:51] Five years, I'm not going to let that happen.
[00:31:53] And if in five or seven years or whatever that amount of time is, we get to the point to where the tool set is normalized and accepted for what it is good at and integrated into that skill set as kind of a toolbox.

[00:32:12] Once they can take credit for it.
[00:32:13] So Rob is asking in the chat, I think it's a really good question, how do they judge the correct diagnosis?

[00:32:19] What I didn't know, and this story was fascinating, is they had, I don't know, 100 old cases that they never publish because they don't want them to affect test results in the future.
[00:32:32] And conveniently, because they were never published, that means the chat GPT didn't learn from them.
[00:32:37] Mm-hmm.
[00:32:38] And so they had kind of virginal cases that are used in these matters and they're old, so people aren't going to come across them.
[00:32:44] And in the end, it's like reading one of those Washington Post stories about the strange illness.
[00:32:48] And finally, they found out it was the goldfish, you know, whatever.
[00:32:52] Mm-hmm.
[00:32:53] Mm-hmm.
[00:32:53] And so these cases did have correct diagnoses in the end.
[00:32:59] So it was a set of data, of input that you could use, and they used it across other kinds of ways to test diagnosticians.
[00:33:06] So I found that interesting, too, that they collected these cases for that purpose and hidden them-
[00:33:11] Yeah, super interesting.
[00:33:12] ...on purpose.
[00:33:13] Yeah.
[00:33:13] Yeah, keep them out and, you know, to be true.

[00:33:35] The Ark Institute unveiled EVO, which is a model that can interpret and generate genetic sequences
[00:33:42] with high accuracy, according to this article in science, or sorry, not the article, but the actual report.
[00:33:51] DNA, RNA, protein sequences, effective forecasting of the effects of genetic mutations.
[00:34:00] Although important to note that human-affecting genomes were excluded from the training data to avoid potential misuse.
[00:34:09] And also that the actual resulting sequences that were generated by EVO, not as of yet capable of forming fully viable organisms.
[00:34:20] But interesting nonetheless.
[00:34:23] Yeah, and I don't often get freaked by anything.
[00:34:26] But when I saw this in association with the word CRISPR, I thought, hmm.
[00:34:34] Yeah, this is an area where you definitely want to have control.

[00:34:40] If you're going to regulate things, this is something to regulate.
[00:34:44] And I'm sure that the field of science is doing that.
[00:34:47] But there's all kinds of amateur CRISPR people all over.

[00:34:54] The AI is given the ability to genetically engineer, and with no human control, they start creating creatures that take us down.

[00:40:31] But the other thing that always strikes me in this case,
[00:40:33] there's 19 articles.
[00:40:35] And they're going to be incredibly repetitive.
[00:40:37] And it just underlines again
[00:40:39] how inefficient the news industry is.
[00:40:43] Well, okay, so I want to tease that a little bit
[00:40:46] or kind of describe,
[00:40:48] get you to share a little bit of thought in that.
[00:40:51] Because when I think of that,
[00:40:52] I'm like, okay, we'll send them,
[00:40:53] what would the alternative be?
[00:40:56] Would it be just one source that is definitive?
[00:41:01] No, it might be three sources.
[00:41:03] It might be, you know, source A does the story.
[00:41:06] Source B comes along and says,
[00:41:07] well, if we can't beat it, we'll link to it.
[00:41:09] But oh, gee, we did more reporting.
[00:41:11] We found out more stuff.
[00:41:12] So we will also do a story.
[00:41:13] We expand upon it, right.

[00:41:16] In newsrooms, we used to say
[00:41:17] that you had to match a story.
[00:41:19] If you were the Chicago Tribune
[00:41:23] and the Chicago Daily News had a story
[00:41:25] and you didn't have your own reporting,
[00:41:27] you had to go get your own reporting to match it.
[00:41:29] So you could verify.
[00:41:30] You hear that on TV all the time.
[00:41:31] NBC hasn't yet verified this,
[00:41:32] but then they do and they say,
[00:41:34] okay, now we can say it as if we reported it.
[00:41:36] Before that, they'll say, you know,
[00:41:38] source one did it, right?
[00:41:39] So matching was part of the ethics of the field
[00:41:44] that you shouldn't report what somebody else said
[00:41:47] without getting your own reporting, A.
[00:41:49] B, you couldn't just report it from the other paper
[00:41:52] because then you'd be stealing it.
[00:41:53] Then it'd be plagiarism of a sort.
[00:41:56] So you either had to attribute or you had to match.
[00:41:59] And if you attributed, you're embarrassed
[00:42:02] because you're pointing to the competition.
[00:42:04] You didn't do your own work.
[00:42:04] You didn't do your homework.
[00:42:06] Well, no worse.
[00:42:06] You're pointing to the competition.
[00:42:07] You're admitting the competition
[00:42:08] as something you didn't have.

[00:42:27] What happens though is oftentimes you'd see,

[00:42:30] a photo would go out in the wire
[00:42:32] and it would say this photo is for everybody in the AP,
[00:42:34] but the Chicago Tribune, if it's their photo,
[00:42:36] would say Chicago out.
[00:42:38] No other Chicago papers may use this photo.
[00:42:41] So it was competitive structure.
[00:42:44] And so that was the game that went on.
[00:42:45] So people did become used to sharing these things
[00:42:47] and having commodity news
[00:42:49] because you didn't have reporters all over the country.
[00:42:51] So for the rest of the country,
[00:42:52] the rest of the world,
[00:42:53] you use the wires,
[00:42:54] you use the homogination of their reporting, right?
[00:42:56] That's the way the world worked.
[00:42:59] Then come the internet,
[00:43:00] come the web and come links.
[00:43:02] Well, we can all report on the whole world.
[00:43:04] We can all rewrite each other.
[00:43:06] We can all end up with the same stories
[00:43:08] under our own bylines.
[00:43:10] So we got,
[00:43:10] that's what our business model demands.
[00:43:12] But it means that everybody on earth
[00:43:15] rewrites the same Buzzfeed,
[00:43:17] two-colored dress story
[00:43:18] without adding any value.
[00:43:20] So what I'm arguing here is that
[00:43:22] we have to get rid of that kind of inefficiency
[00:43:24] where we just do it for the sake
[00:43:26] of having our own page with our own content
[00:43:27] so we get our own ads
[00:43:28] and our own clicks and our own traffic.
[00:43:31] We've got to concentrate on unique value.
[00:43:34] And then what you hope is
[00:43:36] that these agentic structures
[00:43:41] and chat bots like search engines,
[00:43:44] you hope will be tuned
[00:43:47] to promote original reporting
[00:43:52] and authority.
[00:43:54] And if they're pulling back 10 sources
[00:43:56] that are all essentially writing the same thing,
[00:43:59] then how does having the 10 sources
[00:44:02] actually improve the results?
[00:44:05] Because they're all saying,
[00:44:06] I see where you're coming from.
[00:44:07] Right, right.
[00:44:08] And also,
[00:44:09] if a article comes along and says,
[00:44:10] well, we want to share revenue
[00:44:11] with the sources,
[00:44:13] if you have one original source
[00:44:16] and nine rewrites,
[00:44:17] how is it fair
[00:44:19] to share with the nine rewrites?
[00:44:21] And the paradox here
[00:44:22] is that the news industry
[00:44:25] is arguing,
[00:44:27] don't do that to us AI.
[00:44:28] You shouldn't take our stuff
[00:44:29] and rewrite it
[00:44:30] when they rewrite each other.
[00:44:31] It's exactly what they do.
[00:44:33] And I think this kind of discussion
[00:44:35] about value
[00:44:36] and where the value properly lies
[00:44:38] will bring out interesting issues
